Why Choose SERVPRO for Water Damage?

5/1/2023 (Permalink)

We are Highly Trained Restoration Specialists Our professionals specialize in residential water damage restoration, with training focused on restoring salvageable items, and accelerating drying time while documenting the entire restoration process.

The drying method involves equipment like air movers and dehumidifiers that can be noisy. Homeowners will sometimes turn off the equipment at night. Please do not turn off the drying equipment!

Here's why:

Turning off the Drying Equipment Allows Humidity to Rise-

Water damage equipment provides a constant airflow throughout an air-tight space. If you open a window, you negate the machines' ability to work. You also allow moisture from the outside to enter the building.

Feeling the Walls Isn't a Good Indicator of Moisture-

Did you touch the walls to see if they were wet? You might think they're dry far before they really are. Fingers and hands aren't good indicators of moisture levels, especially if water is trapped behind surfaces, which it usually is.

It Will Cost You More, in the Long Run, to Turn off the Machines-

Worried that the cost to run the water damage equipment is sending your utility bills sky high? Actually, it could be much costlier to keep turning them off.

Check with your insurance company too. Your coverage may allow them to pay for a hotel room for a short period.

Water Mitigation in Mayfield and Paducah Kentucky

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Water is essential for life. At the same time, water is the single leading carrier of pathogens in the world today. The elements necessary to support microbial growth are always present; all that is required to initiate a destructive chain reaction of microbial growth is the addition of excess moisture. Where this happens, microorganisms will rapidly multiply and cause structural breakdown (dry rot & wet rot), create odors, and potentially create serious health issues for the building occupants. Too much science?

Why is this important for you to know? When a water loss occurs, either by a busted pipe, ice maker leak, sewage backup, or flood, the single most important thing to know is how much time the structure remains abnormally wet. This is why the most critical course of action is to respond quickly!

SERVPRO uses proven methods and technology to extract excess water for any emergency. Then once the water has been extracted we start the drying process. Air movers, Dehumidifiers, special drying equipment are used to remove excess moisture. Just because it looks dry - doesn't mean it is dry. We monitor the materials affected to be sure we're using the right equipment for the right amount of time!

Detecting Water Damage "Behind the Scenes" in Paducah & Mayfield Kentucky

1/13/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can be anything from a small leak to a gushing stream of water from a busted pipe.  How can I test my home for water damage?

Inside the home, look for the following for signs of water damage:
  1. Water rings on the ceiling or walls pointing to a leak in the pipes.
  2. Soft or sagging spots on the floor, especially near the tub, shower, sinks.
  3. Cracked or warped tile, laminate or wood flooring.
  4. Look in the cabinet under the sink for watermarks, warping and discoloration that may indicate leaking pipes.
  5. Trust your sense of smell. If there is a mildew or musty smell, it's likely there was water damage and now there may be a potential mold issue that will require mold remediation.

Some of the advanced technology we use to detect and measure possible water issues are:

  • Handheld moisture meters that detects the percentage of moisture in the floor or wall.
  • Infrared Camera - allows the technician to see the hot & cold spots that can indicate serious issues.

Timing is everything with a possible water leak - so don't wait!  Let SERVPRO check your home or business with our state of the art technology.  The longer you wait, the more damage water can do.

If you believe you have a water leak call SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield at 270-443-4555. We are available 24/7.

Bursting Pipes in McCracken and Graves County

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Even though last week we had unusually warm temperatures, winter is definitely here now!

Water damage cleanup up and restoration is by far the largest percentage of work we do at SERVPRO of Paducah & Mayfield.

Some of the steps experts recommend may go against your better instincts of conserving water and heat, but the extra expense is nothing compared with a hefty repair bill. Here’s what to do:

Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)

Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.

If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

Urgency is the key to extracting, cleaning, and drying water soaked areas.  Especially to avoid mold and mildew.

Sewer Cleanup

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Most Common Water Damages in the Home

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

What is water damage?

Unfortunately, there are many different forms of water damage that you can find in your home. The SERVPRO of Paducah team has complied a list of the five most common types of water damage that we usually find in our client's homeowner.

Five most common types of water damage

1. Leaking or burst pipes- Pipes can burst for many reasons, making them a common cause of water damage. A lot of the times in Kentucky, pipes will freeze during the cold temperatures and eventually burst. Other common causes are unregulated water pressure, inevitable wear and tear, and other temperature changes.

2. HVAC units- When homeowners forget to check on their air conditioner and provide proper maintenance, these units can accumulate moisture and eventually result in a leak. This can lead to an even bigger problem if mold begins to form.

3. Clogged gutters- This water damage is typically found in the foundation of your home. When gutters are clogged with various debris, they do not operate as they are intended to and overflow at the expensive of your home.

4. Faulty household appliances- Washing machines, refrigerators, dishwashers, and hot water tanks can all cause a lot of damage to your home. Many of these appliances are viewed as necessity, so it is very unfortunate that these appliances are all susceptible to creating damage.

5. General plumbing issues- Plumbing damage is one of the most difficult forms of water damage for the average homeowner to detect. Common signs of this form of damage are dripping faucets, leaks around your tub or shower, and overflowing toilets.

SERVPRO of Paducah can help

As you can see, most of the most common forms of water damage that we have listed are inevitable. That is why it is important for you to have your local SERVPRO franchise within quick reach. Water damage can quickly worsen if homeowners do not immediately address the situation, due to molding and further deterioration.

Call the SERVPRO of Paducah at (270) 443-4555 today to quickly and efficiently address your water damage issues, for a home as good as new.

Water Can cause Lots of Problems

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

water upstairs leaves ceiling wet The ceiling damage caused by a water line in the upstairs bath.

For days prior to its discovery, water had run from a supply line from an upstairs vanity in this upscale home. This resulted in heavy damage to every room on both levels but a living room. Due to the volume of water that flooded the home,  and the length of time involved, much of the materials could not be saved. High end cabinets, high grade wood floor, and ceramic tile were some of the materials involved. SERVPRO of Paducah responded, and the mitigation that was performed prevented additional problems such as mold growth. The structure is now dry and in the process of selecting the new cabinets, flooring, and other choices necessary for reconstruction. The availability of our in-house designers greatly streamlines this process.

Even Hotels Have Water Damages!

4/7/2020 (Permalink)

Air Movers in Hall Dry equipment, air movers drying hall of hotel.

The newest hotel in town knew who to call when they had their first water damage.  A plumbing overflow on the fifth floor damaged several guest rooms and hallways all the way down to the first floor, where it damaged several offices and the service hallway. Our marketing person had already met with them months before to prepare an Emergency Ready Profile. SERVPRO’s rapid response to extract water, do the necessary demo, place state of the art drying equipment, and perform the limited reconstruction made possible by the mitigation, ensured that this hotel remained in business and was returned to fully operational within days. The general manager was extremely pleased with our services and promised to call us for any of his future needs. Call SERVPRO of Paducah with all water damage needs at 270-443-4555.

What To Do About Freezing Pipes

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

To keep pipes from freezing on an outside wall:

  1. Let hot and cold water trickle or drip at night from a faucet.
  2. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or near an outer wall.
  3. Make sure heat is left on and set no lower than 55 degrees.
  4. If you plan to be away: (1) Have someone check your house daily to make sure the heat is still on to prevent freezing, or (2) drain and shut off the water system (except indoor sprinkler systems).

If Pipes Freeze:

  1. Make sure you and your family knows how to shut off the water, in case pipes burst.
  2. NEVER try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch. Use a hair dryer instead.
  3. Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water.

How to prevent frozen pipes to avoid thousands of dollars in damage

3/7/2019 (Permalink)

With cold weather, it’s important to prevent pipes from freezing, because broken pipes can cause thousands of dollars in water damage.

When the outside temperature drops to around 20 degrees Fahrenheit, pipes may freeze.

The water freezing itself is not what causes the pipes to burst. It’s actually the pressure that builds up inside the pipes that causes the burst. So it would, in turn, bust, and then, once the water started to thaw, it would then flood your home.

to prevent frozen pipes, it’s important to be familiar with the plumbing in your home.

Knowing the way your plumbing runs, and if you have the type of plumbing that’s exposed to the elements, it is important to insulate your pipes.

Here are some of the following ways to prevent pipes from freezing:

— Let warm water drip overnight, especially from a faucet near an outside wall.

— Keep your thermostat set at a consistent temperature during the day and night.

— Keep cabinet doors open to let heat reach the pipes under sinks and appliances near outside walls.

— If you plan to travel, set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Shutting off and draining the water system is also advisable.

How to Protect Pipes from Freezing in Paducah, Kentucky

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

As a partner with the American Red Cross, here is some great information on freezing pipes that they have on their website! Check it out!
Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.

Pipes that freeze most frequently are:

  • Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
  • Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
  • Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
How to Protect Pipes From Freezing

Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:

  • Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
  • Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
  • Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
  • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
  • Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
  • If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
  • Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
  • Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
  • Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
  • Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
